How to install or replace a boat switch

Installing a boat switch or switch panel, or replacing a damaged one, is a straightforward process provided you have an understanding of electronics. However, incorrect wiring can cause damage to equipment and even start a fire on your boat - so if you don't have experience with electrical wiring and/or you're unsure of how to correctly wire your boat switch, get help from a qualified electrician.

Boat switch installation is a matter of connecting the switch panel at the front of the boat to the battery, which is usually located at the rear of the boat, via a power loom. The power loom connects to two busbars (a negative and a positive) which in turn connect to the negative and positive wires at the back of the switch panel. From here you can connect navigation lights, fish finders, bilge pumps and the like to the switch panel by connecting the positive line from the device to the relevant switch and the earth to the busbar.
