What Fishing Equipment Do I Need To Catch Barramundi?

Barramundi are notorious in Australian water and have become an extremely iconic fish to chase and catch, however being a powerful ambush predator, you'll need to come prepared to battle it out with fish that can in some instances weigh up to 20kg and be over 1 metre long. Most experienced anglers will put together a shorter, sturdy rod of about 7ft with a medium to heavy action and pair it with a Baitcaster reel, constructed with a great drag system and capable of holding plenty of Braid. This pairing not only will be accurate to cast in denser areas, but also be sensitive to the bite, and contain the strength to deal with the Barras powerful runs. Braid line is also preferred thanks to its strength and low stretch.

If a Baitcaster Reel isn't your preferred, a high-quality Spinning Reel 4000 or larger can also be considered given its size and strength. Read on to learn about where and when to fish for Barramundi, as well as what types of fishing lures can be used to entice a catch.

Barramundi Fishing FAQs

Where can I fish for Barramundi?

Although Barramundi are found both in Fresh and Saltwater, they definitely favour the warmer water - mid to high 20's in temperature - and thus the largest populations centre around the North of Australia, spanning right across from the Eastern seaboard of Queensland, all the way to the Karijini National Park in Western Australia. If you're not from the Northern states, or planning a long road trip fear not, as Barramundi also reside in Lake Eildon in Victoria, Lake Burrendong in New South Wales and even Coorong National Park in South Australia. Finding secluded and sheltered locations in the water are a great starting point, as the Barra are ambush predators and often need to be coaxed out of the shadows before a bite.

When is Barramundi fishing season?

Barra are a great fish to chase, given they are widely regarded as catchable all year round. Admittedly the warmer the water the easier the hunt in most circumstances, so periods between March - May thrive in the northern states. Fishing at Dawn and Dusk will provide the best chance to snag a Barra. Each state and territory will have a different set of rules and regulations regarding exclusions periods and closed seasons, so be sure to review any local rules and regulations from the local authorities before hitting the water.

What Fishing Lures to use for Barramundi?

Choosing a lure for catching Barra is about as wide a search as anything in the fishing world, with an array of options to review and test. Thankfully we've done the hard work for you and narrowed it down. If your preference is Hard Body Fishing Lures, focus on the swimbaits that imitate bait fish like mullet or bream and crankbaits that mimic the fleeing or injured baitfish such as minnows. For Soft Plastic Lures, worms with a realistic action and scent, or shrimps with a lifelike look can often entice the barra. Ultimately, ensure the size of the lure is large or small enough for the size of the barramundi, and utilise the local area baitfish as a guide for what lure to choose and mimic the local fish.

What Else Do I Need To Know About Catching Barra?

Barramundi can be tricky to catch, and even with the right rod, reel and lure you may be caught short with a fish that's a lot more powerful than you anticipated. A high-quality fishing net to help get the fish out of the water is always a great investment in your fishing kit, as well as great fishing tools such as pliers for hook removal and all your terminal tackle needs like spare hooks, swivels and split rings to ensure you don't run out of essentials.
