Sounds Epic…So Where Is Anaconda Island Exactly?
Anaconda Island is located at Tiwi Island Retreat at Port Hurd on the western side of Bathurst Island off the coast of Darwin. It's one of Australia's premier barefoot destinations, providing the perfect base to enjoy everything the island has to offer. It's extremely remote - you get there by light charter plane, boat transfer or sometimes even a helicopter. But that's the beauty…you feel like you're exploring the edges of the map!
Getting There Sounds Like An Adventure In Itself - What About When I'm On The Island?
The island itself offers a wide range of adventurous activities. The angling opportunities are incredible - think estuary, blue water and Heli fishing - while the Retreat has a 12-metre beachfront pool, day bed and loungers for chilling, beach games, pretty much everything you need to have a relaxing stay with sand underfoot. There are day walks along 5 Mile Beach, scenic buggy drives, sunset bonfires, a swimming hole tour with picnic, and opportunities to take part in Indigenous cultural experiences.
Tell Me About The Fishing - How Good Is It?
The great part about fishing in this part of the Top End is that it caters to everyone from the avid angler to the first-time novice. Set out on one of the fishing boats with a dedicated guide to explore the hidden fishing spots nestled within the winding estuaries around the Retreat.
Depending on the tides, you can catch mud crabs by setting or retrieving crab pots, or try your luck at landing elusive barramundi, threadfin salmon and a variety of other species. If the deep sea is more your thing, the catamaran charter (complete with experienced skipper, deckhand and first-class fishing equipment) takes you to some of the most remote and pristine fishing spots in the Top End, where you can target sought-after tropical species such as blue salmon, threadfin salmon, jewfish and golden snapper, among others. Once you've landed your catch, it's back to the Retreat to let the resident chef do his thing in the kitchen!
