Choosing The Right Colour Squid Jig To Maximise Your Success

Choosing The Right Colour Squid Jig To Maximise Your Success

When it comes to squid fishing, the difference between a disappointing outing and a bumper session can come down to simply using the right squid jig. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just starting out, choosing the perfect squid jig is key to attracting these elusive creatures. And while there's a wide range of jig sizes and designs to choose from, selecting the right colour squid jig for your fishing conditions is equally important for increasing your odds of success.

The primary thing to remember is that squid see the world in monochrome (black and white), so while they don't necessarily see colours like pinks or oranges in the same way we do, they do still perceive them as distinct shades. What squid are acutely attuned to, however, is UV light.

With that in mind, there are three parts of a jig's colouring to consider when choosing colours for a squid jig: the base, the outer cloth, and the UV pattern.

Base Colour

What is the Base Colour of a Squid Jig?

The base colour refers to the core colour of the jig underneath its cloth, and it's usually a simple solid or translucent colour.

While there are many possible options, base colours are usually red, gold, silver, rainbow foil or a UV colour. They give the jig its profile, so a squid sees it as a fully solid object. This is critical to tempting the squid to come in for a closer look.

What to Look For When Choosing the Right Squid Jig Base Colour

There are a few things to keep in mind for choosing which base colour to use. In low light, such as on cloudy days or at night, dark colours like reds are ideal, as a darker base colour produces a better silhouette than a lighter-coloured jig. On the other hand, brighter colours will bounce more light off the jig when you're fishing on a sunny day, increasing your odds of attracting a squid's attention.

Outer Cloth Pattern

What is the Outer Cloth Pattern of a Squid Jig?

The outer cloth is the part of the jig that introduces complex coloured patterns and prints, which are typically designed to mimic the prawn or baitfish a squid jig is designed to look like. For the most part, the outer cloth will have a deeper or more highlighted colour on the back of the jig, and lighter shades on the sides. The back colour adds contrast, while the lighter sides highlight the base colour through the outer cloth's mesh pattern.

Choosing the Ideal Outer Cloth Pattern For Your Conditions

As with the jig's base colour, in many cases lower light will see darker colours work well, and lighter colours perform better in bright light.

The outer cloth can often get chewed up as the squid grab the jig and bite it with their beak-like mouth, but don't worry. You'll find this makes the jig work even better in most cases, as squid will keep biting the same area because it looks like a wound or vulnerable spot to target.

UV Patterns

As mentioned, squid have a keen perception of UV light, and this can be a real game changer when you're fishing. The squid can be drawn in by small flashes of UV colouring, even before they make out the whole profile of what they're hunting. This simple factor can be the difference for why one jig catches loads while another comes up empty.

UV patterns on a squid jig are generally made up of stripes or spots, however some jigs are fully UV coloured. Either way, the squid will perceive the UV colouring on a jig strongly, whereas our eyes can only see it under a blacklight.
