Bike Helmets FAQs
How to properly fit & wear a bike helmet
There are a few different factors you need to account for when making sure your bike helmet is correctly fitted. Here's what you need to look at:
- Size: Your bike helmet should fit on your head nice and snug without being too tight. Make sure it can't move side to side while you're wearing it. Bike helmets come with sizing pads that can be added or removed to make sure you get a secure fit. If you're looking for a kid's helmet, the extra sizing pads can be removed as your child grows. Some helmets have a universal fit ring instead of sizing pads, and if this is the case, simply adjust the ring so the helmet snugly fits on your head.
- Position: Your bike helmet should sit low on your forehead with about one or two finger-widths between the helmet and your eyebrows. Take care to make sure the helmet is not sitting too far back on your head, as this leaves your forehead susceptible to injury should you have an accident. A good way to gauge if your helmet is positioned correctly is to check to see if the front rim is visible to you when looking up while wearing your helmet.
- Straps: Your bike helmet's side straps should form a 'y' shape that sits just below your ears. The size of the 'y's' can be easily adjusted to fit the wearer's head perfectly. The chin strap should feel snug under your chin, with no more than one finger fitting between the strap and your chin. A good way to check if your chin strap is tight enough is to open your mouth wide - the helmet should pull down on your head if it is tight enough.
What is a bike helmet made of?
Bike helmets are made of two different plastics that are layered together to protect your head from impact. The outer layer, or shell, is usually made of a firm polycarbonate material. This covers an inner layer which is made from a high-density expanded polystyrene foam that can absorb impacts and cushion your head against certain types of injuries.
How long does a bike helmet last?
Bike helmets should be replaced every three to five years as the materials can degrade over time through environmental exposure, minimising their potential to protect you in a crash. It's important to treat your bike helmets carefully, and if you notice any signs of damage on your helmet make sure you err on the side of caution and replace it. Helmets that have been dropped or have cracks in the outer shell will not protect you as they should if you get into an accident.
