UHF Radio & Walkie Talkie FAQs

How to use a UHF radio?

Using a UHF radio is as easy as turning it on and holding down the channel button until it finds a channel free of activity, depending on what type of UHF radio you have. But most importantly, remember to always check your local and state area for the correct channel allocations you are allowed to broadcast over.

What is a UHF radio?

A UHF handheld radio is basically a two-way radio system that operates across the spectrum of 476.4250 to 477.4125 MHz. Since 2021, the UHF CB frequency range in Australia has been split up into 80 channels, with each channel being dedicated to a specific application, which is why it's always important to only communicate over the correct channel.

Are UHF radios better than VHF?

The answer completely depends on the type of terrain you are exploring. Basically, VHF wavelengths are straighter and can travel further - but can be easily reflected. On the other hand, UHF wavelengths are much better at navigating through dense areas and obstacles but can't travel as far. It all depends on what your specific needs are.

Can you use walkie talkies while driving in Australia?

Using a walkie talkie or UHF radio while driving in Australia is not illegal - as long as you are always maintaining proper control of your 4WD, caravan or vehicle. However, you will need to check with the local authorities in your area if you require a certain licence to operate a 2-way radio and what channels you are allowed to communicate on.
